GROW VERTICAL FARM TO HELP SOLVE LONELINESS

Challenge

Loneliness has become a silent epidemic—particularly among seniors and isolated individuals. It is now considered one of the most significant predictors of declining physical and mental health, surpassing even obesity and smoking. As our societies become increasingly fragmented, the emotional and health consequences of isolation are accelerating.

Problem

More than 1 in 4 seniors report feeling lonely on a regular basis. Loneliness is not just a feeling—it’s a public health issue, linked to increased risks of heart disease, dementia, depression, and premature death. Despite various interventions, most solutions fail to address the core need: a sense of purpose.

Insight

Decades of research show that when older adults are given autonomy, responsibility, and meaningful tasks, their well-being dramatically improves. A standout finding: caring for living things—especially plants—creates a measurable increase in life satisfaction, mental clarity, and social engagement. Gardening fosters daily routine, nurtures optimism, and activates emotional connection.

Opportunity

What if we could help seniors and isolated individuals nurture life, and in doing so, rediscover their own sense of meaning and connection?

v1 Prototype: GROW APP

A wellness and purpose-driven app that transforms passive time into life-giving action. Here’s how it works:

  • Plant & Care: Users are paired with a virtual and physical hydroponic or vertical farming pod, which they help manage through the app.
  • Monitor & Grow: The app provides reminders, progress updates, and gamified care tasks to create habit-forming engagement.
  • Harvest & Donate: Once crops mature, the produce is harvested and donated to local food banks or charities—providing a tangible impact and emotional reward.
  • Track Your Impact: Users receive updates on how many meals they’ve helped create, who they’ve fed, and messages of gratitude from recipients.

Early Signals

  • 87% of participants in early interviews say they would feel “more connected and valuable” if they could contribute to feeding others.
  • In pre-prototype tests, engagement spiked when users were shown visual feedback of plant growth and food donation impact.

Vision

GROW isn’t just an app—it’s a bridge between isolation and contribution. By turning lonely moments into acts of care, we give people purpose, dignity, and a daily reminder that they matter.
